The Walking Dead
- Sam Barrett
Well I just finished playing The Walking Dead, a game by Telltale Games, and I have to say that it was pretty darn good. To be honest I wasn’t sure what to expect from this game before I started playing it because I hadn’t heard much about it, but it ended up being a winner in my book.
This game holds to the style of the TV show with walkers and suspense around every corner and episode endings that leave you either sitting on the edge of your seat or standing an inch from your TV, controller tightly gripped in your hands and wanting to know what is about to happen but you have to play the next episode to find out.

The Game & The Show
The difference between the game and the show though is that you are not playing as Rick and company, but as a middle – aged African American man named Lee Everett, voiced by Dave Fennoy (Mass Effect 2, Fallout – New Vegas, and The Darkness II). Lee is a former college professor that has been arrested for murder, which is why you start the game riding in the back seat of a police cruiser on the way to Atlanta, Georgia. So, you’re riding along having a conversation with the police officer, a person walks in front of the cruiser and the cop ends up driving of the road and crashing the car at the bottom of a decent drop, knocking Lee unconscious. After waking up you kill your first walker, not knowing what’s going on, and make your way to a house where you are attacked by another walker and are saved by an eight year old girl that you in turn vow to take with you and protect. You’ll have to play the game to figure out what happens after that.
The Story
Once I started playing the game, I had a hard time putting the controller down. I thought the story was very cool because it looked like the graphic novel, but played out like a TV show by being split into five episodes and having a “next time/ last time on the walking dead” montage at the beginning and end of each episode.
Probably the best feature of this game is the fact that you have multiple options to choose from for each conversation and action sequence that you participate in. Added onto that, each sentence that you choose to say and each action that you take throughout the course of the story affects how all of the other characters react to your decisions later on and how these characters develop during each episode.

And the negatives...
I only had a couple of things that I didn’t like about this game. First, I got pretty annoyed because it frequently became a bit choppy during some of the cut scenes but, I don’t know if that was how the game is or if it was just the disc I was using because it was a rental. The second problem I had was that every now and then I would tell Lee to look at something and he would walk over and tell me what object was sitting there. And my response would be “Gee thanks for the tip Captain Obvious, I can clearly see what it is since its right in front of me!” Luckily it didn’t happen the whole time and the rest of the game was so good that I forgot about it easily. Lastly, some of the voice acting was a little weak for one or two of the characters, but overall the actors did a good job.
Overall I’d have to give this game a grade of 9 out of 10 and I will without a doubt be replaying it in the future because I’m itching to see how the story will end when I make different decisions.
Well done Telltale Games, well done.
